Chinese New Year is usually held during January of every year and the exact date depends on the lunar calendar. Same rituals are also fell in Singapore Chinese New Year 2009 which will be celebrated on January 26 – 27, 2009 but longer period of celebration will be held all over the country until February.
However, making a visit during two weeks prior to the New Year day is a worthwhile plan to feel a true Singapore Chinese New Year since you will get most of the festival from the city’s celebration. Two weeks before the New Year Day is the time when streets of China town in Singapore filled with shops and vendor stalls, fully decorated with twinkling red lanterns, and loaded with Chinese symbols of good luck and wealth. You will sense the Chinese New Year shopping frenzy as people will buzz here and there to do a big shopping before paying a visit to their relatives and a lively conversation between the owners and shoppers spreads everywhere.
Apart from watching and soaking up in the shopping area, Chingay Parade 2009 is another must-not-missed part of the festivity. To take in the charming street performances, Orchard Road and Kreta Ayer Square area are where you need to be. Chingay Parade 2009 boasts its largest and greatest in multicultural processions from around the world featuring many great performances such as adorned floats, lion dances, fire jugglers, and music performances.
Do note that 26 – 27 January 2009 are Singapore Chinese New Year holidays. So, most shops are closed. However, if you have a fixed schedule on these days, heading to Esplanade Park or Marina Promenade is also worth a visit as River Hong Bao Carnival is ongoing. The River Hong Bao Carnival features a huge and lively fairground decorated with floats of many Chinese representations such as mythical creatures, Chinese Gods, and cherry blossoms. The luminous highlight of the River Hong Bao Carnival is the grand sparkling fireworks which take place on the opening and closing night of the festival. Other options are visiting Sentosa Flowers in Sentosa Isalnd, Singapore zoo, Jurong Bird Park, and Little India.
